How old is Palazzola? When was the first house built here, the first church? In the words of Architect Marina Cogotti, the answers 'are wrapped in the many silences of history'. Undoubtedly the site dates from Roman times, 2000 years ago. At some time after the tenth century it is thought that hermits came here. The first certain record of Palazzola is in 1109. The way and speed with which Palazzola came into the hands of the Venerable English College Rome was truly remarkable. Hinsley put it down to the power of prayer. The Rector Arthur, later Cardinal, Hinsley records that: 'In all this there was a most definite answer to prayer, for we had continued to storm Heaven and got all our friends to help in the assault in order that we might find a suitable villa.' Monsignor John Allen is well qualified to guide us on this journey through the hundred years of English College ownership of Palazzola, having known the villa for more than half of that period. His personal reminiscences, combined with the fruits of scholarly research, open up for us some fascinating new chapters in the history of this lovely place. He pays tribute to the many generations who so frequently name it as 'the antechamber of heaven'.
